Yury Butusov graduated from the directing department of LGITMiK (now the Russian State Institute of Performing Arts: RGISI). The graduation performance, based on S. Beckett’s play “Waiting for Godot”, received two awards at the Golden Mask festival. Over time, the Golden Mask, Chaika, Parabola, Theatre-Lover's Star, K. Stanislavsky Prize and many others were added to the long list of awards, where the Golden Mask appeared seven times in total.
He was the artistic director of St. Petersburg Theatre, named after. Lensovet, (2011–2018) and was the chief staging director at E. Vakhtangov Theatre (2018–2022). He staged performances not only in Russia, but also in Poland, Korea, Norway, Bulgaria, Lithuania, and Denmark.
After the full-scale military invasion of the Russian army on the territory of Ukraine in 2022, Yury Butusov left Russia and continues his creative work in Europe.
