The twists and turns of fate take the world-famous actress Maria to a foreign country, where she receives an offer to work at a theatre A new leader has come to power in that country, the people believe in a brighter and more just future, because everyone is promised equality. But how it will be achieved - no one says.
Rudolf Blaumanis's play "In the Fire" has been staged at the theatre, and the performance is about to begin. However, the actors start disappearing mysteriously. The house is full, but the number of the actors is dwindling. Still the performance goes on.
Maria believes she will be able to perform in such a way that the impact, created by the performance, will change the course of history. But she does not make it to the finale of Blaumanis's play, because another staging director takes over the theater. The kind of director, who plays with the line between life and death and does so literally, not figuratively. The battle between art and seemingly unstoppable evil begins.
In the context of the performance, there is a reference to the real events of 1937-1938, when almost all the employees of the Latvian theatre "Skatuve" were arrested in Moscow.
