This moving and beautifully written story is rightfully considered a gem among the literary works by Ivan Turgenev, a Russian writer (XIX century), who is famous for his precise psychological representations and poetically picturesque texts.

The deaf–and–dumb serf warder Gerasim falls in love with a serf woman Tatyana; however, their mistress, on a whim, arranges Tatyana's marriage with another serf. Gerasim finds some consolation in a litlle dog, which he saved from drowning and named Mumu. But his mistress disapproves of this pet and makes Gerasim get rid of it. The warder obeys, but after that he leaves his mistress and returns to his village (which is a very daring deed for a serf).
