THE RUSSIAN THEATRE OF ESTONIA: GUEST PEFORMANCE
“The most influential German playwright of the first half of the twentieth century” – this is how Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956) is evaluated not only by supporters, but also by opponents of his art, activity, and his taken public position after many years of furious debate.
In these dark times, the respected classic has literally become almost the most topical author. And not only because he wrote a lot about war – about whether and how it is possible to remain human, when a senseless massacre is going on and people kill each other because of ambitions of madmen, who have tasted power, - but also because he understood the pattern of a sick, restricted society very accurately. Brecht, one might say, saw right through society and had no illusions.
Director Timofey Kulyabin offers his own composition, which is based on about half of the plays from the Brecht’s cycle, including the most famous ones – “The Dissident Wife” and “The Spy”. The performance tells us precisely about fear and misery, about collective numbness, about the extinction of the human values in a totalitarian society. The answer to a possible patron’s question, “Why should I watch this?” is very simple: so that you don’t lose what makes you human.
