“Princess Mary” is the longest novella in the novel “A Hero of Our Time” by Mikhil Lermontov, a Russian poet and writer, who, despite his all too short life (27 years), left a significant mark in the literature.
Pechorin, the main character and “a hero of our time”, a talented, but bored young man, flirts with a young Russian princess and conducts an affair with his ex-lover. He also kills his friend (whom he despises) in a duel. Eventually he rejects one woman only to be, in turn, rejected by the other.
