If a theater begins with a hanger, then a performance probably starts with a rehearsal. But no, in this case the performance probably derives from sardines, as a company, preparing for a tour of the provincial cities of good old England, rehearses (and then plays) a simple sitcom, "subtly and unobtrusively" advertising their sponsor’s sardines.
On the other hand, sardines is a mere trifle compared with love triangles, contact lenses, sophisticated revenge and large cactus, all of which take place in real life, and in parallel with the play!
The sitcom spills from the stage to the backstage and vice versa, sucking the actors (and their characters) into the vortex of funny misunderstandings and comic situations, which is not less funny than the production the troupe tries to perform for the audiences.
"Noises Off" is the most famous and popular comedy by Michael Frayn, an English playwright, novelist and translator. This creative work earned him a Laurence Olivier Award. A brilliant example of "a theater in a theater", interweaving the real life and stage action.
